On December 5, 2019, the St. Petersburg State Academic Leonid Yacobson Ballet Theatre will present its premiere of The Queen of Spades ballet at the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre.
During the first decade of winter, ballet art connoisseurs are going to be treated to a long-awaited surprise. Inspired by a story by A.S. Pushkin and set to music by P.I. Tchaikovsky, this neoclassical production is being staged by an all-star team: Iñaki Urlezaga, a renowned danseur and choreographer from Argentina; a world-class Italian set designer Ezio Frigerio and his colleague Riccardo Massironi; and finally, Oscar laureate Franca Squarciapino (Italy), who is designing the costumes in tandem with Irene Monti. The show's lighting designer is Vinichio Cheli (Italy). The new ballet, inspired by a story that has become Russian literature's cult classic, is going to honour the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin on his 220th birth anniversary. The cast will include the best of the troupe's principals. The orchestra will be conducted by Alexander Titov, Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation.
