Golden Mask Tour

This is far from the first time that our theatre has joined the favourites of the Golden Mask, a popular theatre festival. This year, the Yacobson troupe has, once again, been given an opportunity to join the local iterations of the Golden Mask in the Russian region of Karelia, as well as in Latvia.

This is the Karelian capital's ninth time hosting the event. Executive Director Natalya Shumilova comments that the demanding local public is always treated to the best out of the festival's 'gold reserves'. On 7 October, ballet fans from Petrozavodsk, the main city of Karelia, will be able to appreciate the Choreographic Masterpieces by Leonid Yacobson recital at the Musical Theatre of the Republic of Karelia. On 9 October, the same show will take place at another location in Karelia, the town of Kostomuksha. It is a well-known fact that the Masterpieces are very important to us: they symbolise the heritage of our troupe's founder. Special emphasis is given to unique pieces once performed by Leonid Yacobson's Choreographic Miniatures Company, the precursor of our theatre. We are constantly working hard to preserve our great ballet master's priceless creations. For instance, in 2018, we marked the Yacobson Theatre's 50th anniversary with a revived Miniatures production, which won the Special Prize awarded by the Expert Panel of the St. Petersburg Golden Soffit Theatre Award in the 2018-2019 season: For Preserving the Creative Heritage of Leonid Yacobson. Today, the Theatre's tutors, Tatyana Kvasova (Sevastyanova), Valentina Klimova and Valery Sergeyev, are still busy with the next revival; they have also been joined by a one-of-a-kind duo of ballet teachers (formerly also well-known dancers, from among the first to perform the Choreographic Miniatures): Vera Solovyoeva and Nikolay Levitsky, who have spent a long time working in America.

On 16 October, during the 15th Golden Mask Festival in Latvia, the Leonid Yacobson Theatre will be performing Don Quixote — a unique production re-interpreted by Johan Kobborg, with 7  Golden Soffit Expert Panel nominations — at Dailes Theatre in Riga. And on 18 October, the guests of the Theatre House Jūras Vārti in the city of Ventspils will enjoy a grand Gala Concert, featuring the most memorable scenes from our best productions. The Choreographic Miniatures staged by Leonid Yacobson will be a highlight of the Gala, along with classical ballet performances.
